Morocco became Finland’s second-largest supplier of fresh blueberries in the 2025/26 marketing year after shipments rose to a record level, according to Finnish customs data reported by the specialist publication EastFruit.
Finland imported 657 tonnes of Moroccan blueberries worth more than €6 million between July 2025 and June 2026. Morocco finished the season with a 16.2% share of Finnish imports, marking a sharp expansion in a northern European market where it previously played a limited role.
A forty-fold increase in one season
The volume shipped from Morocco was around 40 times higher than in the previous marketing year. EastFruit also calculates that the 2025/26 total was 7.5 times the country’s combined shipments to Finland over the preceding five seasons and 12.5 times its former record, set in 2017/18.
Those comparisons show how quickly the trade changed, but they should be read in context. The figures concern Finland alone and one marketing year; they do not mean that Morocco is the world’s second-largest blueberry exporter.
Finland’s blueberry market is expanding
Finland imported more than 4,000 tonnes of blueberries in 2025/26 for the first time, an annual increase of 62%. Demand has now risen for three consecutive seasons. Morocco gained ground while Spain, the Netherlands and Chile also increased shipments, according to the same market review.
The expansion of the overall market helped create room for a new supplier. It also means Morocco’s result reflects both stronger Moroccan sales and a larger Finnish import base.
Morocco’s seasonal window proved effective
Finnish imports began increasing in January with supplies from Peru, Chile and the Netherlands. Moroccan and Spanish fruit entered in greater volumes from February. Morocco’s share exceeded 32% in March, and monthly shipments peaked at 180 tonnes in May.
This timing is consistent with Morocco’s wider export calendar. Its blueberry season can supply European buyers during a period between Southern Hemisphere shipments and the main northern European harvests. Proximity to the European market can also support shorter logistics chains than those available to more distant origins, although commercial performance still depends on quality, price and reliable cold-chain handling.
A wider shift in Morocco’s berry exports
The Finnish breakthrough forms part of a broader rise in Morocco’s fresh-berry trade. A recent industry review put the country’s total fresh blueberry exports at 89,236 tonnes in 2025/26, up 6% from the preceding season.
Morocco has also expanded sales in other northern European markets. EastFruit reports that it became a leading supplier of raspberries and blackberries to Norway, while direct tomato exports to Finland doubled during the same marketing year.
What to watch next
One record season does not guarantee that Morocco will retain second place. Finnish demand, competing harvests, freight costs and berry prices can all shift from year to year. The stronger test will be whether exporters can maintain regular programmes with Finnish buyers instead of relying on an exceptional seasonal opening.
For Morocco, the result nevertheless demonstrates that its berry industry can reach smaller northern markets as well as its established customers in western Europe. The value of the Finnish trade — more than €6 million — also shows that the change was commercially meaningful, not simply a rise from a negligible base.
