Morocco’s new-vehicle market remained ahead of last year through August 2026, but the latest monthly figures suggest a slower pace. Sales reached 167,465 vehicles over January–August, up 14.2% year on year, according to AIVAM figures reported by Le Matin.
August growth narrows sharply
Only 14,979 new vehicles were sold in August, an increase of 0.9%. Passenger-car sales fell 2.2% to 12,716, while light commercial vehicles rose 22.1% to 2,263. The commercial segment therefore kept the overall monthly total above its year-earlier level.
These two timeframes tell different stories: the eight-month gain reflects accumulated sales, while August indicates how the market performed most recently. A strong cumulative result does not mean every month is growing at the same rate.
Hybrids expand their place in the market
The sales mix is also shifting. AlphaBourse’s account of the AIVAM figures puts electrified passenger-vehicle sales at 25,755 over the first eight months, up 81%. Their share reached roughly 17.4%, compared with 10.9% a year earlier.
Plug-in hybrids accounted for 8,144 registrations, while battery-electric models totalled 1,337. The broader electrified category also includes other hybrid technologies and range-extender vehicles; it should not be read as the share of fully electric cars alone.
Chinese brands gain ground
The same figures show 21 Chinese brands selling 17,096 passenger cars during January–August. Their combined market share reached 11.6%, against 5.4% a year earlier. In August alone, their share was 15.2%.
For the coming months, the useful comparison will be whether passenger-car sales recover alongside commercial vehicles, and whether changes in the powertrain and brand mix persist. August provides evidence of slower growth, but one month does not establish the direction of the rest of the year.
